Autonomous Tractors in the UK: The Software Behind the Hands‑Free Farm Project

Autonomous tractors can already seed, spray and harvest without a driver. The Hands‑Free Farm project shows what is possible when reliable machinery is combined with the right software platform.

Why autonomy depends on robust software

An autonomous tractor is more than sensors and hydraulics. It needs software that:

  • merges data from GNSS, LIDAR and machine sensors in real time
  • issues precise speed, steering and implement commands
  • records every task for compliance and traceability
  • let’s engineers monitor performance and push updates remotely

Without that control layer, even the best hardware cannot operate safely or efficiently for a full season.

Case study – from Hands‑Free Hectare to Hands‑Free Farm

In 2017 Harper Adams University and partners completed the Hands‑Free Hectare pilot: one hectare of barley grown entirely by autonomous machines. The concept has since scaled into the Hands‑Free Farm project, covering 35 hectares and multiple crops. Autonomous tractors and implements now operate day and night, supervised from an on‑farm control room.

Key outcomes:

  • Labour inputs cut by more than 60 per cent
  • Consistent application rates and straight-line accuracy within two centimetres

Timely operations regardless of operator availability

Farmscan AG’s role as technology partner

Farmscan AG supplies the customised remote‑monitoring and control software that keeps those machines running. For OEMs and R&D teams we provide:

  • Secure telemetry, allowing engineers to track engine data, fuel use and implement status from any location
  • Over‑the‑air firmware updates, reducing field visits
  • Data logging in ISOXML format for simple integration with farm management systems
  • White‑label dashboards that OEMs can brand as their own

The same architecture supports smaller commercial fleets, giving growers a gradual path from guidance to full autonomy.

Can you retrofit autonomy to an existing tractor?

Many operators start with a RTK autosteer retrofit. Adding closed‑loop speed and section control is the next step. When implements and tractor are ISOBUS‑compatible, Farmscan AG’s task‑controller software can coordinate both. Full driverless operation then becomes a matter of adding perception sensors and safety systems, not replacing the whole power unit.

Stage

Equipment upgrade

Typical benefit

1. Precision guidance

RTK receiver + Autosteer

< 2 cm pass‑to‑pass accuracy

2. Implement automation

ISOBUS task controller

Variable‑rate inputs, headland turns

3. Supervised autonomy

Perception package + Remote monitor

Continuous operation with remote oversight

Next steps for OEMs and large growers

Farmscan AG works with machinery manufacturers, research groups and progressive farms to integrate autonomous capability. Whether you need a telemetry SDK or a complete control stack, our engineers can adapt the platform to your requirements.
